Can Dogs Have Cherries? The Risks Involved

While cherries may seem like a harmless fruit, they can be dangerous for dogs. The pit, stem, and leaves contain cyanide, a toxic substance. Ingesting these parts can result in cyanide poisoning, leading to symptoms like difficulty breathing, red gums, and lethargy.

The cherry pit itself is also a choking hazard and could cause an intestinal blockage. The flesh is not toxic, but its high sugar content may cause stomach issues.

For safer alternatives, consider fruits like watermelon (without seeds), apples (seed-free), or blueberries. These fruits are not only safer but also nutritious. If your dog consumes cherries, watch for symptoms and seek veterinary help if needed.
